Bright Shadow (2010) – Game

Bright Shadow is a nicely animated, 3D, anime-inspired fantasy MMORPG published by GamePot USA. The game is set in the fantasy world of Luciena and has a strong emphasis on item collection, community and exploration. Those looking for a simple, lighthearted MMORPG should find some substance in Bright Shadow.

Bright Shadow Overview

Bright Shadow is an anime-inspired MMORPG that both looks and feels a lot like Outspark’s popular Fiesta Online title. Perhaps the game’s most unique feature is its detailed card collection system. Players can find and collect over 500 special monster cards that can be obtained by defeating enemies. These cards have numerous uses, from being used as currency for items to unlocking special abilities. Bright Shadow does have numerous unique features and a lot of content which makes the  game worth checking out. The game boasts over twenty playable classes, but there are only four starting ones. The game’s four starting classes are:

Warrior – Warriors in Bright Shadow are masters of ‘close quarters’ combat. They can inflict a great deal of damage to their enemies in melee combat and also absorb quite a bit of hits due to their remarkably high defensive capabilities.

Machinist – The machinist is a fairly unique class, as it’s only found in Bright Shadow and a handful of other titles. They are a mix between an archer and a merchant. They have a powerful long range attack with both bows and guns. They can also craft weapons and armor.

Shaman – With numerous healing and buffing spells, Shamans are the primary supportive class in Bright Shadow; think of them as a mix between a druid and a cleric. Even though shamans are primarily a support class, they still have some offensive magic.

Mage – Like nearly every other MMORPG, a Mage in Bright Shadow is the primary offensive spell casting class in the game. They have devastating area-of-effect and direct damage spells, but have extremely low physical attack and defense. They command the powers of both fire and ice.

Soul of the Ultimate Nation

Soul of the Ultimate Nation is one of many free-to-play massively multiplayer online games present at E3 2009, though unfortunately, it was present only as a brief trailer. The game will apparently be launched stateside by Ijji.com.

Who’s Making This Game: SUN was originally developed by WebZen and launched in Asia in 2007, though it’s being adapted for North American audiences by Huxley PC publisher Ijji.com.

What The Game Looks Like: SUN looks like a colorful hack-and-slash online role-playing game with plenty of knights in exaggeratedly bulky armor and wizards tossing colorful particle effects.

What There Is To Do: Kill monsters, gain treasures, gain experience levels, join an in-game guild, and eventually participate in high-end player-versus-player battles.

How The Game Is Played: You can choose one of five characters: the dragon knight, the berserker, the valkyrie, the elementalist, and the shadow. After you’ve chosen your character, you use it to go out into the world and kill stuff.

What They Say: SUN will be a fun and addictive hack-and-slash game with a “cash-op” microtransaction store, though Ijji.com isn’t commenting on what will be sold there.

Dreamkiller (2009)

Psychologist Alice Drake has a special talent: She can enter the dreams of her patients and cure them of phobias by shooting the meanies that infest their brains. But Alice also possesses another amazing talent. While holding a minigun, she can contort her left arm into the most uncomfortable position without ever suffering from shoulder cramps. You’ll get past the visual oddity of Alice’s freaky arm in time, but Dreamkiller’s other problems are less easily forgotten. This run-and-gun first-person shooter grows tiresome quickly and fails to make good use of the intriguing premise, which is a shame considering its virtually limitless potential. Some of the enemy and level designs display plenty of life and creativity and hint at the great shooter Dreamkiller might have been. Unfortunately, wonky game mechanics make this throwback twitch shooter more of an ancient relic than a welcome blast from the past.

What a great idea: As Alice, you jump into your patients’ dreams and blast manifestations of their phobias. Is the patient arachnophobic? You take on hordes of spiders with your flame-spewing fingers and a helpful minigun. Does the subject have issues with machines? You clear his head of mechanical monstrosities by shutting the robotic infiltrators down for good. You may even learn about phobias you didn’t know existed. Did you know that ponophobia is the fear of working too hard? Or that maniaphobes are afraid of going mad? Sadly, the potential for a cheesy-awesome story goes untapped. Levels are preceded by scantly written case descriptions, and while the still-image story scenes are beautifully drawn, they don’t tell a tale worth hearing. The setup is simply an excuse to let you unload lead into crowds of weird demonic enemies a la Painkiller or Serious Sam.
